Twenty-four years after losing to Germany in the 2002 World Cup in Japan and Korea, Paraguay has exacted revenge. After 90 minutes of regulation time and 30 minutes of extra time, the game ended in a 1-1 draw and was decided by a penalty shootout. In the current World Cup, this is the first game to be decided by a penalty shootout.

Following Uruguay's elimination in the group stage, Germany became the second past champion to be ousted from the current World Cup.

In the penalty shootout, Paraguay scored goals from Mauricio, Gustavo Gomez, Matheus Galarza, and Jose Callane.
Germany's goals came from captain Joshua Kimmich, Jamal Musiel, and Nadiem American.

Orlando Gil, the goalkeeper for Paraguay, saved penalties from Kawhi Leonard and Nick Waltham, although Jonathan Taha's attempt missed the post.

Jonathan Tah of Germany scored in the 12th (102nd) minute of extra time, but the goal was disallowed following a VAR check for fouling an opponent. Since winning the World Cup in Brazil in 2014, Germany has not triumphed in a World Cup knockout stage match. After 12 years, Germany advanced to the knockout stages after being ousted in the group stage of the previous two World Cups; however, they were defeated by Paraguay in their opening game. `Conversely, Paraguay has won the World Cup knockout stage twice. Paraguay advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa by defeating Japan in a penalty shootout during the round of sixteen. However, Spain eliminated them. In the opening encounter of the knockout stage, Paraguay shocked Germany, the previous winner, to advance this time.
