On September 9, 2025, KP Sharma Oli, the Prime Minister of Nepal, resigned after a series of deadly protests against the government led by teenagers, which were also called the "Gen Z protests."

The government banned more than two dozen social media sites, which many people saw as an attempt to stop people from criticizing the widespread corruption and nepotism in the country.

How to Handle Unfavorable Situations

  • Deadly Crackdown: On September 8, 2025, security forces used live bullets to break up crowds, killing at least 19 people and injuring hundreds more.
The next day, Prime Minister Oli said he was stepping down so that a "political solution" could be found.
  • A lot of people set fire to important buildings, like the Parliament building, the Singha Durbar administrative complex, and the private homes of the president and prime minister.
  • A lot of people burned down important buildings, like the Singha Durbar administrative complex, the Parliament building, and the homes of the president and prime minister.
  • Interim Leadership: After the cabinet fell apart on September 12, 2025, former Chief Justice Sushila Karki was named interim prime minister.
  • Airport Shutdown: Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu had to close for a short time because of smoke from nearby fires and security concerns.

Consequences and Legal Action Most of the protests had died down by September 13, 2025, when the social media ban was lifted and a temporary government was set up. But there was still political unrest, and in March 2026, KP Sharma Oli was arrested on suspicion of being involved in the deadly suppression of protesters. In March 2026, there were general elections, and the party led by Balen Shah, who took over as prime minister from Karki, won easily.
